چکیده

Reliable drywood termite detection in structures is challenging but critical for effective management. A microwave-based non-destructive method was evaluated detecting activity. This study factors affecting the ability of this device to reliably detect Cryptotermes brevis timber. The displayed a high probability successfully C. naturally infested boards. system detected termites 97% time when used at highest sensitivity level, while producing few false positives. number did not affect ability, and detectable signals were produced even single present. Detection success decreased with both increasing wood density testing perpendicular grain abrupt transition timber species. maximum depth 45 mm southern pine (Pinus spp.), declined increased limit declining only 20 denser Tasmanian oak (Eucalyptus spp). could samples densities between 392 511 kg/m3 38 thick radiata samples. results support microwaves

Towards an Agent Based Modeling: The Prediction and Prevention of the Spread of the Drywood Termite Cryptotermes brevis

We present initial efforts made to model the spread of the drywood termite in Angra do Heróısmo, Azores, using an agent based modeling approach. First we describe how a simple Cellular Automata (CA) model was created in Netlogo to simulate the spread of the species based on simple assumptions concerning the ecology of the species. A second step was taken by increasing the complexity of the init...

Cryptotermes colombianus a new drywood termite and distribution record of Cryptotermes in Colombia

A new species of drywood termite (Kalotermitidae), Cryptotermes colombianus, is described and new records for Cryptotermes cylindroceps and Cryptotermes mangoldi are presented from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Cryptotermes colombianus is described from two soldiers and genetic sequences. This unusual species differs noticeably from other regional Cryptotermes species for its weak and incons...

Cryptotermes brevis (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) in the Azores: Lessons After 2 yr of Monitoring in the Archipelago

The dispersal flights of West Indian drywood termite, Cryptotermes brevis (Walker) (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) were surveyed in the major cities of Azores. The sampling device used to estimate termite density consisted of a yellow adhesive trap (size 45 by 24 cm), placed with an artificial or natural light source in a dark attic environment. In addition, data from two other projects were used to...

Efficacy of Localized Chemical Treatments for Cryptotermes brevis (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) in Naturally Infested Lumber

Localized injection of insecticides into termite galleries in infested wood represents an alternative to whole-structure fumigation for drywood termite control. The efficacy of this method is limited, however, by the use of repellant insecticides and the difficulty of locating drywood termite colonies. The present study addressed both issues by the use of an experimental acoustic emissions (AE)...
